The advantages of user groups

Article Abstract:

Organizations that operate a computerised personnel information system (CPIS) can derive several benefits from membership in a user group. Membership is particularly valuable for CPIS systems administrators as it permits them to network with other users and grants them access to the collective experience of like-minded professionals. Membership also permits CPIS users to keep in touch with the software house that developed their system, thereby keeping their organization informed of new systems applications that could improve productivity. User groups, though closely associated with software houses, are usually independently managed and financed. These groups are often well organized and usually publish a regular newsletter to keep members informed of new developments. They also often make available to members an official product bulletin provided by the software house to which they are linked.

The challenge of the future

Article Abstract:

Information technology is enabling personnel departments to meet their expanding workloads, but few personnel departments have yet achieved strategic positions within their organizations. The personnel function could affect strategic and business decision making; for instance, it could help companies maintain full employment, achieve highest levels of quality and productivity, and restructure to survive in global markets. CPISs have enabled personnel output be recognized as important to achieving organizational objectives, and personnel people should now find a way to encourage the acceptance of CPISs as management information systems throughout organizations.

Maximising the value of a CPIS

Article Abstract:

Organizations can take steps to maximize the benefits of their computerized personnel information systems (CPIS). One of the problems involved in maximizing benefits is the problem of reducing the personnel management workloads of line managers. Organizations should consider automating the activities that involve the completion of forms by line managers, such as timesheet recording, budgeting, and performance appraisals. The quality of the information that an organization obtains from its CPIS is influenced by the quality of information entered into the CPIS.
