The anorexic organization

Article Abstract:

The cost-reduction efforts of companies are likened to the obsession of some young people with losing weight. Like anorexic people, firms suffering from 'organizational anorexia' see leanness as the solution to all of their problems and pursue it even at the expense of their long-term stability. Instead of making the company 'leaner and fitter,' excessive cost-cutting can weaken its ability to deal with the very important problem of income generation. Anorexic organizations may grow so weak that they may not be able to fight off bankruptcy or acquisitions. Before implementing drastic cost-cutting measures, an organization must first identify its problems and their real causes. Determining the actions that can remedy these problems comes next. It is also important for the organization to have an attainable goal. Human resource practitioners have a significant role to play in the process of recovery.
