The disabled are able to work

Article Abstract:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which forbids discrimination against the disabled, was signed into law on 26 Jul 90. Disabled people are able to work and can prove a valuable resource that should not be overlooked in light of the declining labor resources. Companies can utilize a disabled person with only a small investment to accommodate them: 60% of modifications to accommodate disabled workers cost less than $100, and 90% cost less than $1,000. Projects with Industry (PWI) are partnerships between business, rehabilitation professionals, and the disabled that seeks to place the disabled in productive jobs. PWI partnerships utilize on-the-job training and the interaction of rehabilitation professionals, employers, and unions.

Ready or not: the ADA

Article Abstract:

In May 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a comprehensive anti-discrimination law focused on integrating disabled Americans into the workforce. Companies that fail to comply with the ADA will face civil penalties of up to $50,000 for the first offense, and $100,000 for subsequent offenses. The ADA covers obvious disabilities, including impaired sight and hearing, muscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, and diseases such as cancer, as well as handicaps that are difficult to recognize, such as emotional disturbances and retardation. The ADA takes effect 18 months after enactment.
