The importance of 'big ideas' to HR managers

Article Abstract:

'Big ideas' are popular concepts that impact business practices. Some examples of 'big ideas' that have gained wide acceptance in recent years include 'culture change' programs, 'empowerment' programs, 'globalization,' and 'total quality management.' A 'big idea' is characterized by three features: it is universally applicable, it is simple and has a catchy label, and its validity is obvious. Such ideas encourage managements to address vital business issues. The field of human resources (HR) management itself has been continually changing due to the introduction of several 'big ideas.' Among them are 'performance management,' 'the demographic time bomb,' and 'competence analysis.' There are current trends in the HR field that have the potential for turning into 'big ideas.' These include HR measurement, HR vision, equal opportunities, flexible resourcing, and post-modernist thinking.

The open track to elite status

Article Abstract:

British Rail (BR) has established a development planning center as a way of identifying potentially successful managers and improving the abilities of existing managers. BR uses a complex screening process in selecting the managers who will attend the center. One of the pre-admission requirements is the preparation of a plan for a new business opportunity. Managers who are selected undergo a three-day program of management evaluation and development planning. The managers leave the center with a career development plan that includes a statement of developmental priorities and a timetable for completion. The center has had a success rate of 80% in identifying successful senior managers.
