The role of human resource management

Article Abstract:

A UK survey of 909 human resource managers indicates over 70% see themselves as serving internal business needs while over 50% see a role in strategic planning. About 66% say human resource departments are identified with management, while 70% say central headquarters determines personnel strategy. Of those surveyed, 85% mention the impact of increased future competition, 78% value a flexible workforce, 67% favor a participative management style, and 75% say employers support skills training. Other results concern employee involvement, training, work practices, and rewards.

Increased employee satisfaction may add value

Article Abstract:

A survey of UK companies indicates management believes activities which increase employee satisfaction and morale can also increase companies' economic value. Many companies have begun to use the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award or the European Foundation for Quality Management frameworks. Employee-related initiatives can include team briefings, interviews, appraisals, and surveys.
