Trade union rights in the twenty-first century

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the need for the U.S., the EU and other industrial countries to comply and/or ratify international labor standards. The author argues that stronger labor unions are necessary to advance workers rights, the rights of the poor, and to rein in global corporations that violate these rights and freedoms.

The impact of current economic expansion on employment, and the UAW's ability to secure salary increases, health benefits, and flexibility for retirement plans are evaluated.

Working women began the 20th century as openly discriminated against and did not begin to achieve equal opportunity until the 1960s. As the 21st century begins, the struggles for equal pay, workplace harassment, and female representation in union membership continue.
