Training inner-city youth to work

Article Abstract:

The Clarkson Center for Human Services Inc, in Buffalo, NY, offers minority high school dropouts from inner-cities the opportunity to acquire the work attitudes and job skills necessary for employment, particularly in the hotel and restaurant industry. The Center's youth job training venture with local chefs and restaurant owners is one of its most successful programs, offering instruction on basic cooking, catering, and other food services. Classroom training and personal counseling sessions six hours a day, five days a week, are conducted by the social service agency, with chefs from the area restaurants holding special classes at a public restaurant operated by the Center. Other features of the program are the job-pledging plan, which assures employment for its graduates with the area's major employers, and the workplace mentoring program, which pairs the hired youth with a more experienced older worker.

Britain trains to compete in a unified Europe

Article Abstract:

The reason for the UK's record of poor service seems to be a lack of training, and the country is responding by attempting to improve the service skills of its work force. The UK has a lower level of investment in training than France, Germany, and some emerging Far East nations. The UK government has incorporated training programs into the Training and Enterprise Councils (TEC), a system of agencies attempting to improve skills through the use of public and private resources. The objective of the TECs is to encourage organizations to develop their labor force as part of their overall business plan. Another step being taken by the government is the creation of a national vocational qualification system to provide workers with certifications that will help their careers.
