Voluntary systems of health and safety management fail in a rapidly changing labour market, say researchers

Article Abstract:

Working conditions have changed substantially since the 1980s and companies are now profoundly responsible for the health and safety of their employees. However more needs to be done to reduce accidents and cases of ill health, by assessing the risk of accidents happening, and improving working conditions. Control of occupational health and safety is often inadequate in small companies and many insurance policies concentrate more on compensation figures, than on prevention of accidents.
