What an idea: creativity training

Article Abstract:

Recent research indicates that creative ability is a valuable skill which can be taught to employees in order to facilitate their discovery of innovative ways to solve problems and make decisions. Typically, creative thinking involves divergent and convergent thinking. When using divergent thinking, individuals attempt to break old thinking patterns and foster new ideas. A variety of firms which believe in the importance of creative thinking take advantage of creative consultants and creativity tools to spark innovations. Frito Lay promotes creative problem solving and says the technique helped the firm save $500 million over a six-year period. Du Pont supports creativity through creativity groups made up of ten to 15 people brought together from various backgrounds for the goal of facilitation. Texas Instruments encourages free thinking by promoting a quality policy which stresses creative thinking and problem solving and which is supported by effectiveness teams.

Managing the baby busters

Article Abstract:

The baby bust generation is changing the orientation of human resources management by placing a higher value on job satisfaction than on career advancement and financial reward. This generation of workers in their twenties, people born between the years 1965 to 1975, tend to use quality of life as the determining factor in selecting and keeping a job. Effectively managing baby busters requires companies to bear in mind that this young group has a completely different set of values in comparison to other generations. Outdoor products manufacturer Patagonia and electronics company Texas Instruments Inc are two organizations that have successfully addressed the needs of the baby busters through a non-traditional office environment and educational assistance benefit programs respectively. Suggestions on how to effectively manage baby busters are provided.

Global teams: the ultimate collaboration

Article Abstract:

US-based multinational corporations are starting to apply the team concept beyond their domestic operations. Companies such as Intel Corp. and Maxus Energy are bringing work teams into their international projects because they recognize the fact that there are many important issues that groups can address better than individual workers. Global teams offer numerous benefits, including the expertise of a variety of people, deeper insights into the requirements of the international marketplace, and the synergy needed to harmonize the differing perspectives of dissimilar cultures and business functions. For global work teams to succeed, the reason for their creation must be valid; members must have a common goal, must possess the right skills and training, must be tolerant of differences; and lines of communication must always be open.
