Whatever happened to company training centres?

Article Abstract:

Residential training is increasing in popularity. Many companies, especially in the financial and service sectors, are opening their own centers. Company centers can offer convenience, can provide better facilities than hotels, and can be rapidly appreciating assets. Residential training centers are not advantageous for all companies, however. They can fail to accommodate a company's changing needs, they require major capital investment, and their surroundings and facilities can detract from concentration on training. There is a trend toward smaller group sessions in training, and most companies use a combination of their own training staffs and outside experts in training programs.

Peter Fisher: corporate affairs director, Gateway Foodmarkets Ltd

Article Abstract:

Peter Fisher has spent 11 years with Gateway Foods Ltd in personnel and is now dir corporate affairs. He retains his responsibility for personnel and training, but he is now responsible for managing public relations and legal affairs for the firm. Fisher has helped Gateway Foods through a period of rapid expansion in a five-year period when the firm grew to 821 stores. His new role places less emphasis on personnel, and more focus on making sure Gateway receives public awareness and maintains the image that it has earned.

Twilight study sheds new light on craft development

Article Abstract:

Cussons Group Limited joined with Salford College of Technology (Manchester, England) to develop a craft development program to help its work force to broaden and improve their skills. Participation in the program has given workers the ability to engage in a high degree of cross-trade work. Employee productivity and performance has improved, and industrial relations are also more positive.
