Whither Hong Kong's unions: autonomous trade unionism or classic dualism?

Article Abstract:

The role of trade unions in Hong Kong has become increasingly political in the 1990s, primarily because of wider social awareness and improved democratization. The Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions is pro-democracy and believes in union autonomy, while the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions is pro-communist as well as adversarial. The autonomy of trade unions could be eroded under Chinese rule, although the Chinese government might be reluctant to intervene as a result of democratization.

Whither solidarity? Transitions in Swedish public-sector pay policy

Article Abstract:

Sweden's public-sector pay policy is being transformed, with centralised wage negotiation and fixed salary increases being replaced by a decentralised pay administration system based upon flexible and individualised pay rates. The main aim of the pay reforms appears to be to increase wage differentials amongst occupational groups and attract and retain valued employees, but there is a danger that public-sector salary costs could rise as a result.

What has been happening to pay in the public-service sector of the British economy? Developments over the period 1970-1992

Article Abstract:

New ways of determining public service workers' pay were introduced in the 1970s and 1980s, with more flexible pay structures. Since 1980 there has been considerable diversity in the experience of real earnings growth, with particularly rapid growth in real earnings of females. Many groups of manual workers were exposed to competitive tendering in the late 1980s, although their relative earnings improved through the decade.
