Woman of the moment: Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Article Abstract:

Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a business professor at Harvard, wrote The Change Masters in 1983, a book that has been described by some as more substantial and useful than Tom Peters' bestseller, In Search of Excellence. Kanter believes that management emphasis can be simultaneously placed on entrepreneurial individuals and group or team efforts. Kanter has joined the lecture circuit, sharing the dais with such notables in the business field as Peter Drucker and Tom Peters. She believes that it may be useful to discuss values at the corporate level, but does not think corporate mission statements are in themselves effective. To manage an organization, executives must learn to manage change, and managing change begins with controlling structures and organizations, not concepts.

Prisons

Article Abstract:

Prison design has been subject to review during the 1980s and proposals made in the Prison Design Briefing System (PDBS-1989) have been supported by reports into the prison riots of 1990. The PDBS recommends prisons should be divided into small rectangular house units where prisoners can be better regulated in more congenial social conditions. Woodhill Prison, Milton Keynes, England, differs from the PDBS model in that it is triangular. Its interest lies in the way design can influence prison life and its lessons for future prison design.
