Be careful what you wish for

Article Abstract:

Senior Republicans are pushing for various tax changes in the budget deal between Congress and the White House which could have major negative impacts on the US social safety net. Changing the income tax code to flat tax, national sales tax or value-added tax would end the tax-deductability of health insurance, pension plans and life insurance, and multiply federal treasury funds. However, employers would lose the incentive to give benefits since they would be having the same tax advantages as their employees. Insurance costs will rise causing the number of the uninsured to multiply.

A rising tide lifts all

Article Abstract:

US Comptroller of the Currency Eugene A. Ludwig favors extensive participation by banks in the insurance business, to the dismay of many insurance industry representatives who feel that Ludwig's policies are injurious to insurers. Ludwig's "operating subsidiary" rule, which allows national banks to apply to the Office of the Comptroller for insurance sales, underwriting and other insurance powers, has been a particular point of contention for insurers.

Is privatization the cure for social security?

Article Abstract:

The Social Security fund of the next generation may be privatized, as fewer Americans have faith that the current system will be able to provide for them. Estimates of the rate of savings and expenditures indicate that by 2030 the trust fund will have been exhausted, and the retirees of that generation will have no benefits available to them. Privatization models will be discussed at insurance industry trade conferences in 1996.
