Best's rating monitor: annual review of international companies

Article Abstract:

International insurance companies are rated by A.M. Best Company Inc, based on 1993 financial results, for their financial strength and ability to meet obligations to policyholders. Ratings are assigned to 106 international insurers. Also, A.M. Best has assigned its first financial performance rating (FPR) to international companies. Letter grades and FPR numbers reflect an insurer's financial strength. A plus or minus sign following the grade reflects the direction of the rating, compared to the company's 1992 rating.

Article Abstract:

A table is presented listing 20 international insurance companies with A. M. Best Co's ratings for the period between Jun 26, 1995 and Sep 5, 1995. The companies include life, health, property/casualty and composite insurance firms. The ratings assigned to each company reflect A. M. Best's opinion of their ability to meet financial obligations to policyholders and overall financial strength. The companies listed are based in a number of different countries including Canada, Pakistan, Germany, Ireland and Bermuda.

Article Abstract:

Many insurance companies are embracing the concept of econometrics, measurements that apply mathematical and statistical criteria to help assess financial performance. The insurance industry is using econometrics as a supplemental evaluative measure, primarily because insurers still have success with existing systems. Econometric measurements such as Total Business Return and Economic Value Added find significant application in the insurance industry, however.
