Choosing a business model
Article Abstract:
Life insurers have two distinct business models to choose from. One model involves a portfolio of discrete businesses, with distribution channels used for product manufacturing operation while the retail operation distributes the company's and other companies' products. The other model integrates manufacturing and retailing, with retailing limited to the company's own product. For companies that integrate product manufacturing and retailing, the business can be broken down into components, such as performance, the role of distribution, success requirements, value proposition, economics and competition.

Prudential Insurance Company of America is pursuing demutualization in a bid to retain its competitive edge, believing that being a stock-owned company would boost its presence in the global financial services market. Prior to demutualization, however, Prudential first has to resolve some problems, including a court settlement stemming from a sales abuse case against its agents, massive losses incurred by its health care business and a reinforcement of its public image and strength.
