Cognitive Processes in Judging Cumulative Risk over Different Periods of Time

Article Abstract:

Psychology students at the University of Stockholm participated in the experiment; they were asked to judge the risk of dying for individuals of different life styles, and heredity. The students were given an instruction sheet and the risks to die were expressed in terms like: low risk life (odds one in 1000 of dying in a year), greater risk (five in 1000), or high risk (18 in 1000). The experiment, among other things, measured human initiative approached to statistical analysis. On the average, the subjects were good risk assessors.
