Participation of self-employed ministers and chaplains in church plans

Article Abstract:

The Internal Revenue Code contains provisions for allowing members of the clergy and self-employed ministers to avail of pension and welfare plans of churches. The law does not make distinctions between self-employed and common-law ministers and includes all types of ministers in retirement plans. Nondiscrimination rules allow institutions to exclude self-employed ministers as employees to avail of the firm's retirement plan.
