Defined Contribution Health Plans: Future or Fad

Article Abstract:

Faced with the current environment of increased cost pressures, a backlash against managed care, potential legislation increasing plan liability, and the rise of technology-aided health care consumerism, many employers are seeking new ways to deliver health coverage to employees. Their goals are to manage employer benefit costs, provide greater employee control over plan design choices, and increase employee satisfaction. For some, the solution may lie in the defined contribution approach to health coverage.

The health care cost battle is not over

Article Abstract:

Health maintenance organizations have experienced a reduction in rates for the first time. This is entirely different from past experiences in the second half of 1980 and the first few years of the 1990s. This could have been caused by the imminent health care reform. New techniques in surgery have reduced the average length of hospital stay. Procedures performed in the hospital are now performed on an outpatient basis. These have driven health care costs down.

The importance of former employees

Article Abstract:

Compensation and benefits programs exert a significant influence on employee satisfaction. If such programs do not satisfactorily meet employees' needs, they may breed discontented employees who could do great harm once they retire or leave the company. To avoid this possibility, managers should ensure that compensation and benefits programs redound to their employees' benefits.
