Information technology will fundamentally affect the workplace and how work is done, and this technology can help insurance agents develop new business, provide faster service and become more aware of clients' particular needs. The Internet and other services provide instant access to information about customers industries which allows agents to become more knowledgeable. Policies can be written more quickly and delivered to customers electronically. As a marketing tool, agents can use electronic access as a means to reach niche markets and develop new products.

Independent insurance agents need to maximize their profitability in order to remain competitive in a shrinking insurance marketplace. The market for insurance is soft, with insurers offering competitive prices and consumers demanding more service. Agents can increase productivity by using automation, becoming more efficient, using effective marketing techniques and providing appropriate customer services.

Initiatives can bring agents a brighter future

The independent insurance agency system has its problems but agents do recognize these problems and are attempting to solve them, with their trade associations, through innovative initiatives. These initiatives include recruiting of younger individuals and minorities as agents, developing new marketing research programs and devising national communications programs.
