Five years later, the EU is still defining itself: the insurance industry is changing even faster than the political landscape

Article Abstract:

Consolidation and deregulation are the current issues facing the European insurance industry with the emergence of Eastern European markets to compete with the western companies. Consolidation of companies to produce greater capital for communication systems and structural upgrades and more premium retention. Deregulation and the expansion of banks into financial services has further increased the competition. On the other hand, pension funding is moving to the private sector, distribution will move to independent brokers and fund-management will go to well-established national institutions.

Work site selling offers tailor-made policies

Article Abstract:

Work-site marketing of employee benefits is an effective method of providing the right combination of benefits for each employee. Many companies choose a set of benefits that covers all employees the same despite their individual needs. A good work-site plan starts with a choice of benefits for employees. The employer pays a set sum, and workers pick what they want from the choices. Better computer programs are enabling smaller employers to design more flexible benefits packages. Agents can become advisors on product integration and meet cross-selling prospects through work-site marketing.

The year 2000 is a problem for more than mainframes

Article Abstract:

Insurers are not spared from the year 2000 problem because all their transactions are dated and their clients, whether banks, companies or individuals, depend heavily on computers, mainframe or otherwise. Hence, insurers should take a proactive stance in dealing with the problem by requesting an upgrade from computer vendors who may already have designed ways to solve the problem. It is also more cost-effective than having to merge later with an insurer who does not have the problem.
