Panel: the insurance globe is growing ever smaller

Article Abstract:

US insurers operating overseas can expect the market to remain soft, according to speakers at Ernst & Young's 1997 International Insurance conference. Demutualization and consolidation will characterize the international markets, also, but the privatization of some developing nations' markets could present opportunities. Ernst & Young Private Ltd's Darshan Bijur suggested that companies invest in India, in order to prepare for opportunities that will arise from insurance privatization.

Tort reform tops agenda, but states take lead

Article Abstract:

Congress has begun considering tort reform in earnest, and the insurance industry is part of a broad based business lobbying effort to ensure passage of tort reform legislation. A product liability bill has been passed by both the House and Senate, and a House-Senate reconciliation committee is expected to create a product liability bill that will be offered to Pres Clinton for his signature in the spring of 1996. Tort reform is progressing more rapidly in state legislatures.

Providing family benefits can boost bottom line

Article Abstract:

Providing family benefits such as health care, fitness centers, and lunch programs can help employers maintain low turnover rates in an era when many employees are fearful of losing their jobs. With many companies downsizing, and asking the remaining employees to carry larger workloads, small tokens of appreciation go a long way toward creating stronger bonds in the workplace.
