Article Abstract:

The defeat of the UK Conservative party in the May 1997 general election was a vote against Conservatives, rather than against Conservatism. The instincts of most ordinary voters are very similar to those of most Conservative activists, but voters turned against Conservatives because they were seen as weak, arrogant and incompetent. Furthermore, there was a growing sense that only the greedy vote Conservative. It is clear that the Conservative party now needs to change, and it is already doing so under William Hague.

From Kipling to CNN

Article Abstract:

The English used in some of India's traditional newspapers dates from the 1890s, but satellite TV and some new publications use a more modern version. This applies to the private sector, though India state TV tends to be more traditional. Attempts to introduce conciseness into Indian journalism are met with opposition. The English used in India has charm and a local character, and it is reassuring that it can survive attempts to modernise it.
