Herd instinct takes over

Article Abstract:

The UK stock market was affected by a scare over bovine spongiform ecephalopathy in Mar 1996. This hit shares in the meat and feed industries, and the market as a whole, since the UK balance of trade is likely to suffer, and the government will have to borrow more to pay compensation to farmers. The Conservative party may also find it more difficult to win an election. The market did receive a boost, however, from rumors of a possibility of a merger between British Telecommunications and Cable and Wireless.

Looney Tunes oust Merrie Melodies

Article Abstract:

The US Federal Reserve is not likely to reduce short-term interest rates further, and realization of this has led to a rise in long bond yields. Wages may also rise, according to Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve chairman. This would mean higher inflation rates, and tighter monetary policy. Wages would also affect corporate profits, which in turn would affect share prices. There may be a slowdown in sales of equity funds. Fidelity has already noted a drop in sales for Mar 1996 compared with Feb 1996.

Brussels volatility fuels manipulation doubts

Article Abstract:

The Brussels stock exchange is small and is thus vulnerable to volatility. It can also be more easily manipulated due to its size, and the management committee is investigating the possibility of manipulation by index funds as an explanation for volatility in early 1996. Economic uncertainty is also affecting share prices, and economic growth estimates for 1996 have been revised downwards to 1.6% from 2.2% by the government, with some economists forecasting growth as low as 1% to 1.5%.
