Home HIV tests create new problems: some may fraudulently purchase life insurance to fund medical care
Article Abstract:
The advent of new HIV testing and treatment technologies creates opportunities for insurance fraud. Consumers can anonymously use a home medical test kit to test for HIV infection. Also, combination drug therapies are improving the health of HIV-positive patients. Because HIV-related medical problems often do not appear within the first years of infection, consumers could purchase a life insurance policy, wait during the two year contestable period, and then receive a percentage of the policy's face value from a viatical settlement company.
