Is gender neutral dead?

Article Abstract:

Women's groups, consumer groups, reformers and regulators all fought hard during the 1980s to eliminate the use of gender-based pricing by the insurance industry. Some states passed legislation banning gender-based pricing, but at least 15 states have failed to pass proposed unisex pricing legislation. This may be an indication that the reform movement in the insurance industry has lost its momentum. Many companies set unisex rates because they hoped to be ahead of legislative requirements. However, some of those companies are now returning to sex-distinct rates, since the expected legislation never passed.

Will agents get results?

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies are delighted that Republicans have gained control of the Congress and are hopeful that they will reduce waste and improve the business climate. North American Underwriters and National Insurance Agency's Pres Stephen Rabinovitz is so optimistic he has converted some part-time staff to full time and invested in new office equipment. The major issue facing small insurance agents is competition from banks and other sources.

An economically viable model for insurers to demutualize

Article Abstract:

Restricted access to capital markets has led many mutual insurers to consider demutualization, which is time consuming, expensive and psychologically intimidating. A new Illinois law that assigns subscription rights in whole shares, restricts management from transferring stock, and regulates stock options makes the process less costly. It has become the model for similar legislation in Pennsylvania, Michigan and other states.
