Is it time for a regulatory truce?

Article Abstract:

The National Assn of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) drafted a proposal that aims to protect domestic abuse victims from discriminatory underwriting practices by property and casualty insurance companies. NAIC approved the model legislation in the wake of Safeco Insurance Co's agreement to settle a domestic abuse claim with a client. Safeco's pledge to change its underwriting policy and the willingness of insurance groups to support legislation aimed at protecting policyholders may signal the end of a long-standing dispute between insurers and state regulators.

Getting ahead of Superfund

Article Abstract:

Many insurance companies are segregating or selling their property/casualty businesses in an attempt to circumvent the retroactive environmental liability legislation contained in the 1980 Superfund Act. Cigna Corp. and Aetna Life & Casualty are two prominent examples of insurers who have chosen proactive measures rather than continue to be plagued by Superfund liability. Insurers have long advocated Superfund reform, but divisiveness in Congress has dashed most hopes for imminent reform.
