Lifestyle, mental factors key to LTC underwriting

Article Abstract:

Cognitive functions and applicant lifestyle are as important to effective underwriting of long-term care (LTC) insurance as the applicant's physical condition. A 1995 survey by Cologne Life Reinsurance Co found that 97% of the companies responding incorporate these assessments into their underwriting procedures. Insurers use several screening methods to assess risk in LTC applications, including questions on the applications form itself, telephone and personal interviews and use of attending physician statements.

Joint effort required to build top vendor base

Article Abstract:

Collaborative efforts between field underwriters and the home office can significantly improve quality and control costs of paramedical vendor services. A vendor service/quality control audit of services conducted by field underwriters and the home office can alert the home office to potential problems, strengthen long-term client relationships and illuminate areas of improvement. A thorough audit should rate punctuality in completing required forms, ability to administer routine medical screens and accuracy.
