London

Article Abstract:

The English property and casualty insurance industry is incurring large underwriting losses that have not been counterbalanced by capital gains. An example of this is Royal Insurance Company PLC, formerly the largest and best capitalized firm, lost 210 million pounds sterling in 1991 and its solvency margin is just 35%, primarily due to misreading the property market. Meanwhile, competitor Commercial Union Insurance Cos, after heavy losses on US investments, has rebounded and is the country's best performing insurer.

Rate classification reform in New Jersey

Article Abstract:

Driver classification for insurance premium purposes in New Jersey has been changed to an exposure to loss basis, instead of depending on gender, marital status or age. Factors considered include years of driving experience, driving record, type of auto and number of miles driven. This change was implemented because of faults in the prior method. The new system allows for quick premium adjustments for changes in loss exposure, resulting in a more efficient market.

Leaving their mark on history

Article Abstract:

The history of the fire insurance industry can be traced through fire-marks and advertising signs. Fire-marks were plaques identifying the insurer of a building for the fire brigades and to deter arson. Signs began to replace fire-marks in the late 1800s. The Fire Mark Circle of the Americas was organized in 1972 to preserve the historical artifacts of fire insurance companies.
