Long-term care insurance: a mixed opportunity

Article Abstract:

Insurers marketing long-term care insurance should be careful to fully understand new opportunities created by changes to federal laws to customers in order to avoid the costly mistake of being perceived as engaging in questionable practices, as such marketers were in the 1980s. The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 allows customers to deduct premiums for long-term policies from their taxable income, but stipulations govern the deductions.

Tax reform for LTC: defuses the Medicaid bomb

Article Abstract:

Tax changes in long-term care (LTC) insurance will benefit insurers, employers, employees and the Medicaid system. Under a new health care reform bill, employers can deduct the cost of LTC coverage as employee compensation and employees will not be required to pay taxes on LTC benefits. The bill will also benefit insurers by boosting sales of LTC policies. The move is expected to mitigate the number of older Americans who enter the Medicaid system.
