Treating the agony of assumptions

Article Abstract:

Insurers with sudden financial obligations to meet due to an 'old portfolio of assumed reinsurance' may take three steps to mitigate their losses. These pertain to the identification of the sources and circumstances of their reinsurance exposure, the administration of its portfolio and the commutation of their liabilities. These requires a review of contracts with a reinsurer's ceding companies and businesses covered by the contracts as well as procedures for claims processing.

The merger and acquisition trend among US businesses is changing the insurance intermediary marketplace and may have a major impact on the industry. The reinsurance market community is one sector of the industry that has not been spared by this trend. To protect their corporate objectives, small and large reinsurers must address certain issues regarding the operational impact of consolidation. These include volume, business mix, geographic expansion and insurance acquisitions.
