Running out the clock

Article Abstract:

The insurance industry is rushing to convert its computer systems by Dec 31, 1998 to become Year 2000-compliant. Insurers are allotting at least one year to test these changes and ensure that systems would operate correctly by the turn of the millenium on Dec 31, 1999. The challenge to change computer systems from a two-digit date to a four-digit one and thus prevent their mass failure on Jan 1, 2000 has been exerting enormous pressure on the budget and manpower of insurers. However, it has also compelled companies to examine older systems and find ways to upgrade or replace them.
