The dangers of deregulation

Article Abstract:

The state has ceased to be a provider as it was in the heyday of the welfare state, but it cannot shed its role as a regulator. This is evident from concern in the UK over bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The state is seen as the guardian of public health. Regulation has also increased with the privatization of essential services. People have a right to be reassured that fire regulations and other regulations will protect their safety in hotels. There is a need for a powerful referee to act as a counterweight if the market is to rule.

Japanese step out cautiously down road to deregulation

Article Abstract:

Japan is introducing new deregulation measures to attempt to cut costs and prices and promote economic growth. The plan contains almost 1,800 points but many of these are not new, and contentious issues have been avoided. Imports are rising rapidly despite the slow pace of deregulation and they are rising especially fast in areas like automobiles and consumer electronics where Japanese companies are strong. Japan aims to contain the economic shock which could result from wider deregulation combined with rising imports.

Using deregulation to recharge the organization

Article Abstract:

Deregulation may be a used as a chance to reorganize business as one gas utility company did. The gains brought about by the company's plan include the formulation of a long term remuneration package supportive of corporate goals and organizational changes, improvements in communication and improvements in company goals. The changes have made the company a more entrepreneurial and market-focused company.
