Today's managed care market

Article Abstract:

A lot of employers are expected to enroll their employees into managed care plans and move them out of the traditional but more expensive health plans. This is foreseen to happen as medical care costs rise especially for employees with chronic health problems. Employers are also assessing the effectiveness of patient care management (PCM) programs in reducing medical costs. PCM programs strive to develop a relationship between the patient, physician and a program patient manager to minimize hospitalizations through patient education.

Identifying and eliminating lifestyle-related medical costs

Article Abstract:

Many US benefit managers have renewed their interest in employee wellness programs, considering them effective means of cutting corporate health care and related costs. However, senior management appears reluctant to invest in health promotion programs, often citing failed experiments of the early 1980s. A five-phase process is used to analyze the economic aspects of certain risk factors and to demonstrate how certain techniques can be used to develop tailored and cost-effective wellness programs on-site.

Managed care network quality: employer action plans

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to evaluate employer strategies for minimizing medical costs and related risks for liability. The study focuses on the application of total quality network management (TQNM) in preventing such liabilities. Results show that the gatekeeper approach is effective in containing medical expenditures. In addition, TQNM ensures the maintenance of high-quality managed care networks.
