When America's heartland skips a beat

Article Abstract:

A major earthquake is forecasted to occur at the New Madrid seismic zone in the Midwest that is projected to cripple the financial structure of the country and cause losses of up to $60 billion in the insurance industry. Spreading across seven states, total property values in the area are estimated at $8 billion and would outweigh the two most quake-prone areas of California. Arkwright has established a research and development team within underwriting to work with customers in risk identification and assessment.

A fictitious scenario is presented that depicts a world without traditional insurance companies. Instead, consumers use bank terminals or their home PCs for most financial transactions, including adjustments to insurance coverage. Surviving insurance companies limit themselves to claims processing in this futuristic market, while technology companies, using highly sophisticated data capture and processing systems, underwrite risk.
