Working both sides toward a single goal

Article Abstract:

Allstate Insurance Co. has hired the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) to help the insurer achieve compliance with federal civil rights laws. NFHA will spend three years training and educating employees about compliance, providing a service that complements Allstate's decision to maintain new underwriting guidelines that should facilitate minority purchases of home insurance. The Allstate-NFHA working relationship may encourage other insurers to adopt similar relationships with consumer groups, in order to ensure compliance and improve their relationships with minority customers.

HUD grants questioned

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provide grants to certain consumers groups to investigate housing discrimination cases. Some insurance companies argue that insurance redlining effectively turns HUD into an insurance regulator which runs counter with the provisions of the Fair Housing Act. Such controversy was prompted by racial discrimination complaints filed before the HUD against several insurance companies. The respondents deny the allegations contending that they apply underwriting standards consistently regardless on an individual's background.
