A quest for peace: Ayukawa Yoshisuke and U.S.-Japan relations, 1940

Article Abstract:

Industrialist Ayukawa Yoshisuke and the Japan Economic Federation played a pivotal role in negotiating peace between the US and Japan in 1940. Japanese businessmen supported a rapprochement with the US by attracting American investment in Manchukuo. The federation arranged for Major General John F. O'Ryan's visit to Japan to negotiate American loans. Ayukawa was also engaged in private diplomacy. The probability of Japan signing an Axis pact and the collapse of the Yonai ministry made these efforts futile. The proposed peace through economic interdependence was realized after the Pacific War.

Eisenhower and Japanese economic recovery: the politics of integration with the Western trading bloc, 1952-55

Article Abstract:

Dwight D. Eisenhower planned to bolster the Japanese economy by integrating Japan into the Western trading bloc in an effort to secure Japanese loyalty during the Cold War. The US policy was opposed by both American citizens and Western Europe. Despite opposition, Japan became a member of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1955. Strategically, US economic agreements brought Japan close to the West. However, in economic terms, Japan's slow progress toward liberalization dispelled hopes of a multilateral economic integration.

Article Abstract:

The cultural interplay between Japan and the US has been examined through the works of two renowned Japanese fiction writers, namely, Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Endo Shusako. Ryunosuke and Shusako' stories have primarily focused on the effects of Japan's importation of Christianity from the US. They suggest that the Japan's perception of Western culture, particularly religion, remains to be characterized by the movements of a pendulum swing as it shifts from feelings of inferiority and of superiority to the West.
