Alternatives to coca production in Bolivia: a computable general equilibrium approach

Article Abstract:

A computable general equilibrium model is developed to assess the economic effects of alternative to coca production. The method involves decreasing the level of coca production and using 21 alternative crops to restore income level of smallholders. The results show that sugar, cattle, forestry and maize provide the best alternative to coca production. However, the study also indicates that any coca eradication programs should consider the micro and macroeconomic level of market adjustment mechanisms for all the substitute crops.

Economic crisis, structural adjustment and social crisis in Nigeria

Article Abstract:

Observers comment on the growing marginalization, anxiety and tension among Nigeria's poorest and the working class. The causes of this growing political and social tension are the World Bank's Structural Adjustment Program currently operational in the country and the orthodox policies of the International Monetary Fund. Three steps are suggested to the IMF and World Bank to neutralize the existing tension in the country.
