Chaos in the North Caucasus and Russia's future

Article Abstract:

Chechnya is spreading violence beyond its borders and across the entire North Caucasus region, and although Moscow has begun to make some advances against the Chechen insurgents, in some parts of North Caucasus the Kremlin is losing control of the situation as it has failed to understand the roots of the problem and take effective steps. The fallout from Chechnya's war is enveloping the North Caucasus, escalating violence nourished by deep social and economic pathologies, and for Russia, with its millions of Muslim population, the future direction is disturbing.
