Iraq: economic sanctions and consequences, 1990-2000

Article Abstract:

This article examines the effects of UN imposed sanctions on Iraq since the end of the Gulf War in 1991, which have been catastrophic for the Iraqi people and economy. The author considers other factors as well, namely: the 1980-1988 war with Iran, the militarization of the economy, and the invasion of Kuwait followed by the Gulf War; results find that these other factors have had less significant impact than sanctions.
