Common European defence and transatlantic relations

Article Abstract:

The strategic thinking of a common European defence policy is gaining acceptance on the eve of the 1996 Inter-governmental Conference (IGC). A clear perspective on the defence role of the European Union and the question of national sovereignty and collective efficiency is yet to come. The IGC will further face dilemmas in its role in the Atlantic Alliance and future participation of the East European nations. The unsuccessful role of the European Union in the Bosnian turmoil is a blot on its political credibility.
