Destination unknown: Rokkasho and the international future of nuclear reprocessing

Article Abstract:

Expansion of investment in nuclear power in response to global warming and energy scarcity depends on solutions being found to the management and disposal of spent reactor fuels. Just as the UK is withdrawing, Japan is embarking on large-scale reprocessing with the opening of the facility at Rokkasho that seems destined to produce large surpluses of plutonium against a background of heightened concerns over nuclear proliferation.

Nuclear order and disorder

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the Cold War concept of nuclear order, which was constructed on a system of abstinence and deterrence, and how this system has fallen apart in the 1990s. The author asserts that the US changed its ordering system to missile defences and enforcement, which may affect the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agreement.
