Globalization and private capital movements

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the management of foreign direct investments (FDI) and portfolio equity flows among developing countries; contrary to neo-liberal views, developing countries utilizing FDIs and controlling volatility caused by portfolio capital movements rely on effective governments; explosive growth in portfolio equity capital flows due to increasing liberalization since the mid-1980s has also exposed developing countries to greater risks. The author has also found that developed and resource-endowed countries receive more inflows of capital; inter-country economic development between 1980-1997 has become increasingly unequal; and developing countries in South Asia and Africa, unlike in other regions, have remained extremely disadvantaged.

Responses to complex humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters: an analytical comparison

Article Abstract:

Complex humanitarian emergencies have some similarities to natural disasters, yet have distinctly different responses. The chief difference is how institutions are affected, with natural disasters temporarily distrupting infrastructure while complex emergencies significantly affect institutional overtones and aims.
