Good international citizenship: a third way for British foreign policy

Article Abstract:

The UK's Labour government has introduced an ethical dimension into foreign policy, with particular emphasis being placed on human rights diplomacy. However, the government has not yet established a conceptual framework for deciding the priority of the principles detailed in its mission statement for foreign policy, and questions must still be raised about the extent to which the UK under the New Labour administration can be regarded as an exemplary international citizen. It can be argued that efforts to put human rights at the centre of foreign policy have led to inconsistency in the application of the policy.
