India-Pakistan deterrence revisited

Article Abstract:

The political relations between India and Pakistan have eased considerably since the 1999 Kargil conflict and the 2002 confrontation, with leaders on both sides trying to improve the conditions and do practical business together, including on Kashmir. Even though the security relationship does not seem to be seriously precarious, there is a need and scope for doing a good deal more to reduce risks.

Pakistan: transition to what?

Article Abstract:

The political situation in Pakistan in the wake of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's death is analyzed as its future hangs in the balance. Pakistan needs a government that will build up her institutions, fight against domestic extremists and sort out its relationships with her neighbors and only a legitimate government which is the prime need of the hour can achieve all this.

How robust is India-Pakistan deterrence?

Article Abstract:

Ways of settling the conflicts between India and Pakistan and of avoiding a nuclear war are discussed. Particular attention is given to the importance of applying political strategies of reconciliation, mainly to the Kashmir problem, in order to stabilise the countries' political relationships.
