Less is more: The problematic future of irregular warfare in an era of collapsing states

Article Abstract:

The success of the United States against irregular threats is seen to be inversely related to the deployment of resources to the effort, leading to the conclusion that 'less is more'. The cases of El Salvador, the Philippines and Afghanistan where successful outcomes were disproportional to the small size of military units employed is compared to the Iraq situation where unlimited resources are ineffective in the all-out efforts.
