Multilateral diplomacy and conflict resolution

Article Abstract:

The case studies of the Baltic states and the Balkan disaster show the importance of multilateral diplomacy as an effective tool for resolving international conflict. Timely action, a sense of urgency, clarity of purpose, involvement of an institution in which all parties are members, and leverage are important factors for a successful multilateral diplomacy. Military force can be more effectively used in multilateral diplomatic efforts as a threat. Use of deterrence as a strategy is recommended.

East Asia's changing defence industry

Article Abstract:

Countries in East Asia are expanding their industrial-defence capabilities by forming deals to obtain technological and military expertise. They are seeking to maintain growth via exports, but both Western and East Asian defence industries are being forced to respond to the same international competitive pressures. East Asia's defense industries are becoming increasingly commercialized and civilianized, with the government having a declining influence on arms production.
