NATO entrapped: debating the next enlargement round

Article Abstract:

The enlargement of NATO remains a very sensitive issue, with the enlargement process requiring constant reviews. Agreement has been reached on the admission of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland in 1999, but NATO has so far succeeded in avoiding extensive public debate on a further enlargement round so as not to create problems for the ongoing ratification procedures in the parliaments of NATO member states. However, France continues to state privately that Romania should be admitted rapidly to NATO. There are a number of options for the next enlargement round, including admitting only Slovenia and admitting only Romania and Slovenia.

History, grand strategy and NATO enlargement

Article Abstract:

The federal government's foreign policy initiative to expand the NATO has elicited surprisingly unified opposition from historians who consider the action ill-timed, ill-conceived and ill-suited to the cold war era. This policy position of the government has created an important gap between those who make grand strategies and those who contemplate such policies. The NATO expansion initiative in relation to grand policy makers and in the light of history is reviewed.
