Japan and the European Union: reluctant partners

Article Abstract:

The relationship between Japan and the European Union (EU) is exclusively anchored around trade. The absence of a meaningful dialogue between the two gives rise to mutual indifference. The 1992 EC Council draft conclusions were half-hearted efforts at enhancing the partnership through intensified trade and industrial cooperation. Japan's status as an industrialized nation should make it an ideal partner for the EU in the Asia-Pacific region. Concluding genuine multilateral agreements could remove much of the reluctance evident in the Japan-EU partnership.

The strategic implications of the Euro

Article Abstract:

European Monetary Union (EMU) is the most significant event in transatlantic and European politics since the Soviet Union ended. The euro currency has a good chance of success, and this could lead the European Union (EU) to develop military and diplomatic capabilities. The relationship between the US and Europe could change with the EU becoming increasingly assertive and less prepared to accept US leadership in security problems in Europe. The EU will have to undergo some changes, however, for EMU to be successful.
