Nation-building in the land of eternal counter-insurgency: Guatemala and the contradictions of the alliance for progress

Article Abstract:

The consequences of US-sponsored development assistance programmes in Guatemala during the 1960s, the so-called Alliance for Progress decade are examined. The declassified and unclassified State Department records reveal that the US Agency for International Development mission in Guatemala helped organize numerous co-operatives, community leadership programmes and modernization projects that empowered disenfranchised Mayan Indians and poor Ladinos.

Diamonds are a guerrilla's best friend: the impact of illicit wealth on insurgency strategy

Article Abstract:

This article examines war ravaged Angola. The author, stating that Angola is a country with large amounts of wealth in the form of natural resources, argues that the war is not driven by a rebellion against political and social injustices, but by competition for access to the diamond mines.

Mine smartness and the community voice in mine-risk education: lessons from Afghanistan and Angola

Article Abstract:

The mine-risk education programmes will fall short of their intended impact for as long as they fail to take into account local responses. The six criteria of mine-smartness, that carried out evaluations of mine-risk education in Afghanistan and Angola are presented.
