Rethinking US defence planning

Article Abstract:

US defense planners must examine the country's priorities in its defense program in light of changing demands on US forces and rapidly changing technologies and concepts for warfare. Changes in the thinking of the Dept. of Defense will have to be adopted to be able to support the nation's plans at global engagement and leadership, despite budgetary constraints. These include sufficient cuts in selected parts of the force to provide necessary funding for key modernization programs.

The United States and the Persian Gulf: preventing regional hegemony

Article Abstract:

The military and economic policies of the US and its allies can play a crucial role in preventing the regional hegemony of the Persian Gulf that could result from the instability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The US needs a comprehensive strategy that would encourage a balance of power between Iran and Iraq, improve regional cooperation, stabilize GCC states and leverage the benefits of the Arab-Israeli peace initiatives.

The Persian Gulf remains the strategic prize

Article Abstract:

Several factors are challenging the security of the Persian Gulf. These include the increasing demand for oil in Asia, reduced support for US policies towards Iraq and the geopolitical competition over the Caspian Basin's resources. It is argued that the US must address these issues by reassessing its policies towards to Gulf. A key step is the efforts of the Clinton administration to improve ties with Iran.
